This week, the Sunday School students learned about how Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego choose not to worship King Nebuchadnezzar’s 90′ by 9′ golden statue (Daniel 3). Enraged that the three men would not bow down to the image upon hearing music play as he had ordered, the king told his army soldiers to bind them and throw them into the furnace. He had commanded that the fire be made seven times hotter than usual, which resulted in a heat so intense that the soldiers carrying the victims were themselves killed just being so close to it.
Peering into the furnace, the king was amazed to see four men, unbound, walking around inside: the three and a fourth that “looks like a son of the gods.” The king shouted to the men in the furnace and asked them to come out, and Meschach, Shadrach and Abednego emerged, without injury and even without smelling of fire. Astonished and supportive in his oppressive, autocratic way, King Nebuchadnezzar praised God, and ordered that anyone who says anything against their god be cut into pieces and their houses turned into piles of rubble.
In the pre-K classroom, the children talked about how God watches over and protects us, even in the scariest times. The “home connection” section on their leaflet provided them a sample prayer to say if they are scared: ”Dear God, be with us. Take away our fears. Send your angels to guard us.” They also received the verse Psalm 91:11 that tells them, “He will command His angels…to guard you in all your ways.”
