Lesson 7 in our Sunday School winter program covered the baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:13-17). The children heard about how the 30-year-old Jesus left his hometown of Nazareth where he had grown up with his parents, brothers and sisters, and traveled to the Jordan River where John was baptizing people. They learned the faith word “beloved,” a dearly loved person, and how when Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened and a voice said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
As part of our discussion on baptism, we talked about sponsors, the people with the lifelong role of supporting us in our faith. As an activity in the first-second grade classroom, the children filled out and colored a thank you note to take home to mail or give to their godmother(s) and/or godfather(s). Click on the picture below to access a link to download a copy of the thank you card (Word format) that your son or daughter can fill out and color for his/her godparents.
Next week, the children learn more about John and how he paved the way for Jesus.
