This week, the classes covered the second lesson in the winter series, beginning our study of the New Testament and leading us one step closer to the birth of Jesus. The children learned a three-part story (Luke 1:26-56): First, the angel Gabriel appears to Mary in Nazareth to tell her that she would give birth to Jesus and that her cousin, Elizabeth, was also going to have a son; second, when Mary visits Elizabeth, Elizabeth’s baby, John, leaps when he hears Mary’s greeting; and third, Mary tells others about how God has done great things.
Mary’s voice still echoes today through “The Magnificat,” a canticle or song of praise with her words (English translation below). Click here to hear one of many songs inspired by Mary’s words (this version is “Magnificat” by David Haas).
“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever,
even as he said to our fathers.”
Next Sunday, the children perform the Christmas program, “The Birthday Party,” during the 11:00 AM worship service.
