WELCOME
ENTRANCE HYMN (Stand) Crown Him with Many Crowns LSB 525
1 Crown Him with many crowns,
The Lamb upon His throne;
Hark how the heav’nly anthem drowns
All music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing
Of Him who died for thee,
And hail Him as thy matchless king
Through all eternity.
2 Crown Him the virgin’s Son,
The God incarnate born,
Whose arm those crimson trophies won
Which now His brow adorn:
Fruit of the mystic rose,
Yet of that rose the stem,
The root whence mercy ever flows,
The babe of Bethlehem.
3 Crown Him the Lord of love.
Behold His hands and side,
Rich wounds, yet visible above,
In beauty glorified.
No angels in the sky
Can fully bear that sight,
But downward bend their wond’ring eyes
At mysteries so bright.
4 Crown Him the Lord of life,
Who triumphed o’er the grave
And rose victorious in the strife
For those He came to save.
His glories now we sing,
Who died and rose on high,
Who died eternal life to bring
And lives that death may die.
5 Crown Him the Lord of heav’n,
Enthroned in worlds above,
Crown Him the king to whom is giv’n
The wondrous name of Love.
Crown Him with many crowns
As thrones before Him fall;
Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns,
For He is king of all.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION LSB 151
In the name of the Father and of the ✠ Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.
Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the ✠ Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
KYRIE LSB 152

THE PRAYER OF THE DAY
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray. Everlasting God,
You have ordained and constituted the service of angels and men in a wonderful
order. Mercifully grant that, as Your holy angels always serve and worship You in
heaven, so by Your appointment they may also help and defend us here on
earth; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
FIRST LESSON (Be seated) Daniel 10:10-14: 12:1-3
And behold, a hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. And he said to me, “O Daniel, man greatly loved, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright, for now I have been sent to you.” And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up trembling. Then he said to me, “Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days, but Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I was left there with the kings of Persia, and came to make you understand what is to happen to your people in the latter days. For the vision is for days yet to come. . . .”
“At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.”
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
ANTHEM JUBILATION CHOIR Psalm 30: I Will Exalt You, O My Lord
Setting: Aaron David Miller
I will exalt you, oh my Lord
I will exalt you, oh my Lord
You have lifted me up
You have saved me
I will exalt you, oh my Lord.
My heart sings to you
My sorrow’s turned to dancing
You have clothed me in joy.
My heart sings to you
My sorrow’s turned to dancing
I will give you thanks forever more.
SECOND LESSON Revelation 12:7-12
Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL Luke 10:17-20
The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the 10th chapter.
Glory to You, O Lord.
The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON
Grace, mercy and peace be to you from God our Father and from our Lord and Savior Jesus. Amen. Dear friends in Christ:
We Lutherans don’t keep a specific list of saints. And that’s because we know that all Christians are saints in that they have been declared holy through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.
That being said, we do make lists of those we choose to remember with festival days. In these lists we exclusively choose Biblical characters – those whom we like to highlight for their unique stories and contributions.
Today is one of those festival days. And the saint we are remembering is certainly more unique than all the others. That’s because this saint is an angel.
Michael is one of two angels named in our scriptures. The other, Gabriel, does not have a festival day on our list – probably because he gets mentioned every year, around Christmas time, when we hear of his announcements to Zechariah and Mary.
Michael, as we see clearly in the scriptures, is a warrior angel. We first hear of his protection of Israel in the book of Daniel. He then gets mentioned in the New Testament books of Jude and Revelation. Our second reading today from Revelation further shows him to be a leader of other angels. And for this reason we also call him an “archangel.”
The name Michael means “he who is like God.” Michael is certainly God-like in that he protects us. And perhaps the name also points to the fact that angels have more God-like powers than humans do. The scriptures show that angels are able to move and travel and do physical things to a greater degree than people can.
Angels may be more powerful than people in certain regards, but they also seem to share at least one particular weakness with us. Angels are like people in that they can fall from faith by rebelling against God.
And this brings us to consider the greatest rebel of them all – the one who also appears in today’s second reading. This is the fallen angel named Satan, also known as the Devil.
One of Satan’s greatest successes is convincing people that he is simply a mythical figure. When people think he doesn’t exist, he can work under the radar much more effectively.
The Scriptures make Satan’s presence clearly known. And they reveal him for who he truly is. They start by identifying his sneaky and yet greatly significant presence in the Garden of Eden. Then they move through his subtle but persistent efforts to derail Israel – as seen through his attempts with those like Job. They speak out with great clarity about his desperate attempts to waylay Jesus, God’s Son. And they conclude with explaining his battle with God’s church in the present age.
Our reading today from Revelation 12 describes the time when Satan and his forces of evil were thrown out of heaven. This happened when Jesus came against them with his full power and authority, and with his shed blood.
Helping Jesus in this epic action were God’s good angels, namely Michael and company. They fought Satan when he appeared before them in a form here described as a dragon.
The joyous message of this text is that Jesus and the angels were successful in their efforts. They defeated Satan and threw him out of heaven forever.
And why is this such good news? The key to understanding it starts with noticing how Satan is described. He is a dragon, yes, but also an accuser. And more specifically, he is “the accuser of our brothers” – one who “accuses them day and night before our God.”
Satan’s banishment from heaven is good news for us because he is no longer there to accuse us. The victory in heaven which cast him down brings hope to us on earth – a hope that comes from knowing that we who share in this victory are no longer banned from the heavenly life to come.
But let’s flesh out the details of this victory a little more.
Satan’s rebellion and removal from heaven is one of those mysteries of which God tells us very little in his Word. We do know that Satan led a substantial rebellion of angels after creation and before the fall of Adam and Eve. Revelation 12:4 indicates that up to a third of the angels listened to Satan, who presumably used the same temptation that he later used with Adam and Eve – promising them: “you will be like God.”
Our text is one of the few places where certain details of this mystery come to light. The book of Job and Revelation 12 both make it clear that after Satan’s fall he still had access to the presence of God for some time and that his primary activity was to bring accusations before God against sinners. The one who deceived Adam and Eve continued to remind God of the ongoing pattern of sin in Adam’s descendants, which includes us.
The prophet Zechariah had a vision which also shows Satan engaged in such accusation. In the third chapter of his book he says: “Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. And the Lord said to Satan, ‘The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?’ Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments. And the angel said to those who were standing before him, ‘Remove the filthy garments from him.’ And to him he said, ‘Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments’” (Zech 3:1–4).
Here we see Satan, reveling in his power to stand before God, accusing and condemning Joshua, who was Israel’s high priest. But then the Angel of the Lord, who here is the preincarnate Christ, defends Joshua against these accusations.
This is the scene also pictured for us in Revelation 12. Again we see the activity of Satan as the accuser who accuses sinners before God, day and night – like a prosecuting attorney who argues against those he deems guilty. Satan accuses them of being unworthy of fellowship with God because of their sin, knowing that a verdict of guilt will bring them painful and eternal consequences.
The good news trumpeted by our text is that this accusing by Satan is no longer effective. He has been cast out of heaven and thrown down to earth. No longer does he have his day in God’s court to bring accusations against us. Michael and his fellow angels have battled with him and his followers and have defeated them.
Reading this account, it might appear, at first glance, that the source of this victory is solely the power of Michael and the other good angels. They seem to get most of the attention here.
But this is not the case. Looking closely, we see that martyred Christians were also involved. The text tells of those who “have conquered… by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even to death” (v 11). Those who gave “testimony” and “loved not their lives” are the martyrs. And their sacrifice has made an impact.
More than these, however, the greatest credit for victory goes to someone else. The song of praise in our text tells us who. The key element in the conquering – made clear because it is listed first – is “the blood of the Lamb.” This is a sure and certain reference to Jesus Christ, whose perfect life and innocent sacrifice was like that of the spotless lambs once sacrificed for Israel’s sins.
Yes, the basis for Satan’s removal as the accuser before God is the blood of the Lamb. Satan can no longer accuse sinners because Christ has paid the price of all sin. Those who know and believe this can be certain that Christ is now their advocate, interceding for them as their savior.
St. John writes of this wonderful work in his first epistle: “If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 Jn 2:1–2).
The apostle Paul also tells us of Christ defending us before the Father, saying: “Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us” (Rom 8:34).
The source of this victory in heaven is the blood of the Lamb. And this victory in heaven brings us hope on earth.
Our text states: “Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” (v 12). And these words may not seem very reassuring since they speak of “woe” and mention that the devil has come down to be among us. But their message is simply a warning, not a cause for despair.
Yes, the devil will be active among us in this life. He will tempt us, lie to us, and spread chaos all around us. Looking at the state of the world, we definitely know this to be true.
But even amidst the devil’s wrath and the pain it spreads, we who dwell on earth still have hope. And that hope comes, first and foremost, from knowing that Satan can no longer accuse us before God.
When your sins are drowned in the waters of Holy Baptism, and forgiven in the Absolution, and pardoned through the eating and drinking of Christ’s body and blood in his Holy Supper, you stand forgiven before God in heaven. Christ is your advocate and Satan cannot accuse you!
Moreover, the same angels who cast Satan out of heaven are the very angels who guard and watch over you each day on this earth. Michael and all the good angels have the victory of Christ on their side. They do not meet Satan as equals, but as angels who are superior in the Lord their Creator.
Lest anyone think that we do not have hope in the midst of the evil that Satan furthers on this earth, we need only fast-forward to chapter 20 of Revelation where we read of Satan’s destiny. There it says: “And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever” (20:10).
These words assure us of ultimate victory. And we thank God for this victory in heaven, won by Christ on the cross and carried out by Michael and the angelic hosts. This victory fills our earthly struggles with both hope and faith as we press toward our heavenly goal.
Surrounded and protected by these angels who have done and continue to do so much on our behalf, we join their voices in praising the Lamb, saying: “Worthy are you… for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth” (5:9–10).
This is our song. And this is our faith.
Knowing of it, may God keep us in good spirit and good courage. And may he keep us forever in faith.
In the name of Jesus, our Lord and our Savior. Amen.
HYMN OF THE DAY (Stand) Christ, the Lord of Hosts, Unshaken LSB 521
1 Christ, the Lord of hosts, unshaken
By the devil’s seething rage,
Thwarts the plan of Satan’s minions;
Wins the strife from age to age;
Conquers sin and death forever;
Slams them in their steely cage.
2 Michael fought the heav’nly battle,
Godly angels by his side;
Warred against the ancient serpent,
Foiled the beast, so full of pride,
Cast him earthbound with his angels;
Now he prowls, unsatisfied.
3 Long on earth the battle rages,
Since the serpent’s first deceit;
Twisted God’s command to Adam,
Made forbidden fruit look sweet.
Then the curse of God was spoken:
“You’ll lie crushed beneath His feet!”
4 Jesus came, this word fulfilling,
Trampled Satan, death defied;
Bore the brunt of our temptation,
On the wretched tree He died.
Yet to life was raised victorious;
By His life our life supplied.
5 Swift as lightning falls the tyrant
From his heav’nly perch on high,
As the word of Jesus’ vict’ry
Floods the earth and fills the sky.
Wounded by a wound eternal
Now his judgment has drawn nigh!
6 Jesus, send Your angel legions
When the foe would us enslave.
Hold us fast when sin assaults us;
Come, then, Lord, Your people save.
Overthrow at last the dragon;
Send him to his fiery grave.
NICENE CREED LSB, Back cover
I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life ✠ of the world to come. Amen.

We pray especially for those on our prayer list and for those we name in our hearts at this time… Grant that Your holy angels may be with them always, that the evil foe may have no power over them. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Father in heaven, Your Son instituted His Holy Supper for the forgiveness of our sins. Give us humble hearts to receive this blessed Sacrament with thanksgiving; and strengthen us through the same for our daily lives of faith. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

THE LITURGY OF HOLY COMMUNION
PREFACE (Stand) LSB 160
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, out of love for His fallen creation, humbled Himself by taking on the form of a servant, becoming obedient unto death, even death upon a cross. Risen from the dead, He has freed us from eternal death and given us life everlasting. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:
SANCTUS LSB 161
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of pow’r and might:
Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
Hosanna. Hosanna.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING LSB 161
Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.
Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
THE WORDS OF OUR LORD
Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My ✠ body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My ✠ blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
PAX DOMINI LSB 163
The peace of the Lord be with you always.
Amen.

The weary find eternal rest,
And all who suffer want are blest.

Angels descend with songs again,
And earth repeat the loud amen.
