THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

 SEPTEMBER 5, 2021

 ST. PAUL’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, FALLS CHURCH, VA

✠ ✠ ✠

PRELUDE      O Son of God, in Galilee      Charles Callahan

WELCOME

ENTRANCE HYMN    (Stand)      #841      Sts. 1-4      O Son of God, in Galilee

1      O Son of God, in Galilee
You made the deaf to hear,
The mute to speak, the blind to see;
O blessèd Lord, be near.

2      O listen to the silent prayer
Of Your afflicted ones.
O bid them cast on You their care;
Your grace to them make known.

3      The speechless tongue, the lifeless ear
You can restore, O Lord;
Your “Ephphatha,” O Savior dear,
Can instant help afford.

4      Meanwhile to them the list’ning ear
Of steadfast faith impart,
And let Your Word bring light and cheer
To ev’ry troubled heart.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

In the name of the Father and of the ✠ Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Our help is in the name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.

If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

(We observe a moment of silence for self-reflection.)

Together we pray:
Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy Church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

KYRIE

In peace let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy.

For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy.

For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy.

Help, save, comfort and defend us, gracious Lord.
Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy.

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS

1  To God on high be glory
    And peace to all the earth;
    Goodwill from God in heaven
    Proclaimed at Jesus’ birth!
    We praise and bless You, Father;
    Your holy name, we sing—
    Our thanks for Your great glory,
    Lord God, our heav’nly King.

2  To You, O sole-begotten,
    The Father’s Son, we pray;
    O Lamb of God, our Savior,
    You take our sins away.
    Have mercy on us, Jesus;
    Receive our heartfelt cry,
    Where You in pow’r are seated
    At God’s right hand on high—

3  For You alone are holy;
    You only are the Lord.
    Forever and forever,
    Be worshiped and adored;
    You with the Holy Spirit
    Alone are Lord Most High,
    In God the Father’s glory.
    “Amen!” our glad reply.

THE PRAYER OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Let us pray. O Lord,
let Your merciful ears be open to the prayers of Your humble servants and grant that what they ask may be in accord with Your gracious will; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

✠ ✠ ✠

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST LESSON      (Be seated)                                                                      Isaiah 34:4-7a

Say to those who have an anxious heart,
“Be strong; fear not!
Behold, your God
will come with vengeance,
with the recompense of God.
He will come and save you.”
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
then shall the lame man leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.
For waters break forth in the wilderness,
and streams in the desert;
the burning sand shall become a pool,
and the thirsty ground springs of water.”

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

PSALM 146      (Read responsively)

Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
I will praise the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

Put not your trust in princes,
in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
When his breath departs he returns to the earth;
on that very day his plans perish.

Blessèd is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord his God,
who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them,
who keeps faith forever;

who executes justice for the oppressed,
who gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets the prisoners free;
the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
the Lord loves the righteous.

The Lord watches over the sojourners;
he upholds the widow and the fatherless,
but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.
The Lord will reign forever,
your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the Lord!

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.

SECOND LESSON                                                                                James 2:1-10, 14-18

My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called?

If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. . . .

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA VERSE      (Stand)

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL                                                                                                         Mark 7:31-37

The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the 7th chapter
         Glory to You, O Lord.

[Jesus] returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him. And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue. And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You, O Christ.

SERMON

HYMN OF THE DAY      (Stand)      #797    Sts. 1, 3,5       Praise the Almighty

1      Praise the Almighty, my soul, adore Him!
Yes, I will laud Him until death;
With songs and anthems I come before Him
As long as He allows me breath.
From Him my life and all things came;
Bless, O my soul, His holy name.
Alleluia, alleluia!

3      Blessèd, oh, blessèd are they forever
Whose help is from the Lord Most High,
Whom from salvation can nothing sever,
And who in hope to Christ draw nigh.
To all who trust in Him, our Lord
Will aid and counsel now afford.
Alleluia, alleluia!

   5      Praise, all you people, the name so holy
Of Him who does such wondrous things!
All that has being, to praise Him solely,
With happy heart its amen sings.
Children of God, with angel host
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!
Alleluia, alleluia!

APOSTLES’ CREED

      I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

      And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day He rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

      I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Heavenly Father, in Holy Baptism You have caused waters to break forth in the wilderness and streams to flow in the desert of this world. Open our eyes to this new life in Christ and our ears to continually hear Your Word. Free us to walk uprightly, and loose our tongues to praise You for this treasure. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, You have made us heirs of Your kingdom by calling us to faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Keep us from showing partiality in our life together as your people and from making distinctions among ourselves. Instead, make us rich in good works and generous in love toward one another Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

 Heavenly Father, as your Son Jesus did all things well, so also lead us to pursue excellence in the work of our vocations. Bless all marriages, all parenting, and all efforts to share the faith. Be with those who serve you in their jobs and provide for all who are seeking employment. Watch over those whose labor is dangerous or difficult. And may all who seek to serve you in their labor find joy and fulfillment in what they do. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, we place our hope in You and ask Your blessing upon Joseph our President, Ralph our Governor, and all who lead us in our nation, that their plans would be ordered for the welfare of those they govern and that through them You would execute Your justice for the sake of all. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

 Heavenly Father, behold graciously the sick and those in any need, especially Ann, Arlo, Sophia, Dolly, Melissa, Gloria, Norma, Trudy, Mary Ann, June, Peter, Wendy, Halle, Arthur, Ron, Jim, Nadine and others whom we name in our hearts __________. Heal them and sustain them according to your wisdom and care. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, grant that all who come to the Lord’s Supper this day would do so in repentance and faith for the forgiveness of sins and in the unity of a true confession. May they be strengthened in faith and encouraged in love. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

All these things and whatever else You know that we need, grant us, Father, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever. Amen.

✠ ✠ ✠

THE LITURGY OF HOLY COMMUNION

PREFACE TO HOLY COMMUNION      (Stand)

The Lord be with you.
   And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.
   We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
   It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Mercifully forgiven and restored as Your people, we now seek restoration with others for whom our Savior gave His life and with whom we gather at His Table. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

SANCTUS

        Holy, holy, holy Lord
         God of Sabaoth adored;
        Heaven and earth with full acclaim
         shout the glory of Your name.
        Sing hosanna in the highest,
         sing hosanna to the Lord;
        Truly blest is He who comes
         in the name of the Lord!

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and Eve, who ate the forbidden fruit, and You justly barred them and all their children from the tree of life. Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by a second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and made His cross a life-giving tree for all who trust in Him.

We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink of the fruits of His cross and receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood.

Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

THE LORD’S PRAYER

      Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.  Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD

PAX DOMINI

The peace of the Lord be with you always.
   Amen.

AGNUS DEI

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,
You take the sin of the world away;
O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,
Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray.

O Jesus Christ true Lamb of God
You take the sin of the world away;
Have mercy on us, Jesus Christ,
And grant us peace, O Lord, we pray.

DISTRIBUTION      (Be seated)

The Communion Assistant will come forward to receive first, then those from the pulpit side – by order of pew, front to back. Communicants will come up the center aisle and return via the side aisle. When all from the pulpit side have communed, the baptismal font side will commune in the same manner. Distancing must be maintained between all communicants. Masks should be kept on except for the moment of consuming the elements. We ask that the wine be consumed away from the tray table. Empty cups should be dropped into the baskets.

COMMUNION MUSIC      Praise the Almighty, My Soul, Adore Him     Robert Lind

NUNC DIMITTIS      (Stand)

1 O Lord, now let Your servant
    Depart in heav’nly peace,
    For I have seen the glory
    Of Your redeeming grace:
    A light to lead the Gentiles
    Unto Your holy hill,
    The glory of Your people,
    Your chosen Israel.

2 All glory to the Father,
    All glory to the Son,
    All glory to the Spirit,
    Forever Three in One;
    For as in the beginning,
    Is now, shall ever be,
    God’s triune name resounding
    Through all eternity.

POST-COMMUNION COLLECT

BENEDICTION

SENDING HYMN    #849     Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness

1      Praise the One who breaks the darkness
With a liberating light;
Praise the One who frees the pris’ners,
Turning blindness into sight.
Praise the One who preached the Gospel,
Healing ev’ry dread disease,
Calming storms, and feeding thousands
With the very Bread of peace.

 2      Praise the One who blessed the children
With a strong, yet gentle, word;
Praise the One who drove out demons
With the piercing, two-edged sword.
Praise the One who brings cool water
To the desert’s burning sand;
From this Well comes living water,
Quenching thirst in ev’ry land.

 3      Let us praise the Word Incarnate,
Christ, who suffered in our place.
Jesus died and rose victorious
That we may know God by grace.
Let us sing for joy and gladness,
Seeing what our God has done;
Let us praise the true Redeemer,
Praise the One who makes us one.
