THE TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

OCTOBER 10, 2021

ST. PAUL’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, FALLS CHURCH, VA

✠ ✠ ✠

PRELUDE            You are the Way, through You Alone      Keith Kolander

WELCOME

ENTRANCE HYMN    (Stand)      #526                      You are the Way, through You Alone

1      You are the way; through You alone
Can we the Father find;
In You, O Christ, has God revealed
His heart and will and mind.

 2      You are the truth; Your Word alone
True wisdom can impart;
You only can inform the mind
And purify the heart.

3      You are the life; the empty tomb
Proclaims Your conqu’ring arm,
And those who put their trust in You
Not death nor hell shall harm.

 4      You are the way, the truth, the life;
Grant us that way to know,
That truth to keep, that life to win
Whose joys eternal flow.

INVOCATION

 In the name of the Father and of the ✠ Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP

In the morning, O Lord, You hear my voice;
In the morning I prepare a sacrifice for You and watch.

My mouth is filled with your praise,
   And with Your glory all the day.

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
And renew a right spirit within me.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

God has given us the ministry of reconciliation. Therefore, let us be reconciled to God and to one another.

(We observe a moment of silence for self-reflection.)

Gracious God,
have mercy on us. In Your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone. Uphold us by Your Spirit so that we may live and serve You in newness of life, to the honor and glory of Your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.
Amen.

KYRIE                                                                                                 see p. 168 for music

In peace let us pray to the Lord.
   Lord, have mercy.

For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.
   Lord, have mercy.

For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.
   Lord, have mercy.

For this holy house and for all who offer their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.
    Lord, have mercy.

Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.
   Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE                                                                                                     p. 171

This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia.

Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God.
Power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and blessing and glory are His.
This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia.
Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation:
Blessing and honor and glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen.
This is the feast of victory for our God, for the Lamb who was slain has begun His reign.
Alleluia, alleluia.

THE PRAYER OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Let us pray. Merciful Father,
Your patience and loving-kindness toward us have no end. Grant that by Your Holy Spirit we may always think and do those things that are pleasing in Your sight; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST LESSON      (Be seated)                                                               Amos 5:6-7, 10-15

Seek the Lord and live,
lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph,
and it devour, with none to quench it for Bethel,
O you who turn justice to wormwood
and cast down righteousness to the earth! . . .

They hate him who reproves in the gate,
and they abhor him who speaks the truth.
Therefore because you trample on the poor
and you exact taxes of grain from him,
you have built houses of hewn stone,
but you shall not dwell in them;
you have planted pleasant vineyards,
but you shall not drink their wine.
For I know how many are your transgressions
and how great are your sins—
you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe,
and turn aside the needy in the gate.
Therefore he who is prudent will keep silent in such a time,
for it is an evil time.
Seek good, and not evil,
that you may live;
and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you,
as you have said.
Hate evil, and love good,
and establish justice in the gate;
it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts,
will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

PSALM 90:12-17     (Read responsively)

Teach us to number our days
that we may get a heart of wisdom.
Return, O Lord! How long?
Have pity on your servants!

Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,
that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
and for as many years as we have seen evil.

Let your work be shown to your servants,
and your glorious power to their children.
Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us,
and establish the work of our hands upon us;
yes, establish the work of our hands!

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
   and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
     is now, and will be forever. Amen.

 SECOND LESSON                                                                                     Hebrews 3:12-19

Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. As it is said,

“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA VERSE      (Stand)                                                                                     p. 173

Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia.

GOSPEL                                                                                                       Mark 10:17-22

The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the 10th chapter
         Glory to You, O Lord.

As [Jesus] was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You, O Christ.

SERMON      Rev. Dr. Daniel Hoang

HYMN OF THE DAY    (Stand)    #694    Sts. 1-4             Thee Will I Love, My Strength, My Tower

 1    Thee will I love, my strength, my tower;
Thee will I love, my hope, my joy.
Thee will I love with all my power,
With ardor time shall ne’er destroy.
Thee will I love, O Light divine,
So long as life is mine.

2    Thee will I love, my life, my Savior,
Who art my best and truest friend.
Thee will I love and praise forever,
For never shall Thy kindness end.
Thee will I love with all my heart—
Thou my Redeemer art!

3    I thank Thee, Jesus, Sun from heaven,
Whose radiance hath brought light to me;
I thank Thee, who hast richly given
All that could make me glad and free;
I thank Thee that my soul is healed
By what Thy lips revealed.

 4    O keep me watchful, then, and humble;
Permit me nevermore to stray.
Uphold me when my feet would stumble,
And keep me on the narrow way.
Fill all my nature with Thy light,
O Radiance strong and bright!

APOSTLES’ CREED

      I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

      And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day He rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

      I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

OFFERING

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For humility and right faith, that we would dare not approach God in our own righteousness, but rather come before Him in repentance to inherit eternal life by His grace in Christ alone, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For readiness to receive the Lord’s correction, that God would keep us from hating His laws and those He sends to reprove us with His law; and that we would honor His authority and respect His words of truth, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For those who serve in the church, especially our brother Daniel, that God would bless their efforts, daily lead them in their calling, and keep them from the attacks of the evil one, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For Joseph our president, Ralph our Governor, and all who govern us in the Lord’s stead, that God’s favor would rest upon them and establish the good works of their hands, so that all might live together in peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For those on our prayer list and for all the Lord’s servants who are afflicted in body or soul, including those we name in our hearts at this time… that God would grant health and healing in accordance with His perfect will and satisfy them with His steadfast love in Christ, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

In thanksgiving for all who bring offerings to the Lord’s house; and that God would bless the offerings to his glory and the furthering of the goals of his kingdom, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all who commune this day, that God would satisfy their longing hearts with His steadfast love, and that their receiving of Christ’s body and blood in faith would cause them to rejoice and be glad in Him all their days and into eternity, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

In thanksgiving for [_______________ and] all the saints whose confidence in Christ the Lord was kept firm unto the end; and that God would graciously keep us in the same faith, that in the end we may enter with them into His rest, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF HOLY COMMUNION

PREFACE TO HOLY COMMUNION      (Stand)                                                          p. 178

The Lord be with you.
   And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.
   We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
   It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

It is truly good right and salutary…evermore praising You and saying:

SANCTUS

Holy, holy, holy Lord, Lord God of pow’r and might:
Heav’n and earth are full of Your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

 PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

   Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.  Amen.

 THE WORDS OF OUR LORD

 PAX DOMINI

The peace of the Lord be with you always.
   Amen.

 AGNUS DEI

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace, grant us peace.

DISTRIBUTION      (Be seated)

 The Communion Assistant will come forward to receive first, then those from the pulpit side – by order of pew, front to back. Communicants will come up the center aisle and return via the side aisle. When all from the pulpit side have communed, the baptismal font side will commune in the same manner. Distancing must be maintained between all communicants. Masks should be kept on except for the moment of consuming the elements. We ask that the wine be consumed away from the tray table. Empty cups should be dropped into the baskets.

COMMUNION MUSIC      Thee I Will Love, My Strength, My Tower       Philip Gehring

NUNC DIMITTIS      (Stand)                                                                                        p. 182

Lord, now You let Your servant go in peace;
Your word has been fulfilled.
My own eyes have seen the salvation
which You have prepared in the sight of ev’ry people:
A light to reveal You to the nations
and the glory of Your people Israel.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

POST-COMMUNION COLLECT

 BENEDICTION

SENDING HYMN    #918                                              Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer

1      Guide me, O Thou great Redeemer,
Pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
Hold me with Thy pow’rful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
Feed me till I want no more;
Feed me till I want no more.

 2      Open now the crystal fountain
Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fiery, cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through.
Strong deliv’rer, strong deliv’rer,
Be Thou still my strength and shield;
Be Thou still my strength and shield.

 3      When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death and hell’s destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side.
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever give to Thee;
I will ever give to Thee.
